Blue-light photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers effective, non-invasive and pain-free treatment for moderate inflammatory acne, a condition affecting millions of adults, teens and children in the United States. Narrow band blue light causes a photodynamic effect within the pilosebaceous gland (oil glands) that kills P. acnes, the bacteria primarily responsible for acne. Treatments consist of a series of appointments where patients sit in front of the blue light for less than 20 minutes a few times a week for a period determined by each patient's condition and needs. Our doctors are experts in blue light treatment and can create an individualized treatment plan for each patient.
Blue-light PDT can also be combined with a special topical solution called Levulan or ALA (amino levulinic acid) for more severe acne cases. In addition, the use of Levulan with PDT is an effective treatment for actinic keratosis (pre-cancerous skin growths) that can be seen on the skin as scaly red or white spots. For actinic keratosis, this treatment is covered by many insurance plans, and can reduce the risk of future skin cancers in at risk patients.
